Bess Weatherman is a managing director at Warburg Pincus and member of the firm’s executive management group. Warburg Pincus is a leading global private equity firm focused on growth investing, with more than $35 billion in assets under management and 120 portfolio companies around the world.
Ms. Weatherman joined Warburg Pincus in 1988. Under her leadership, the firm has invested in some of the most renowned and innovative healthcare companies around the globe including: Bausch & Lomb, the global eye health company, which Warburg Pincus acquired in a $4.4 billion take-private transaction in 2007, rebuilt and revitalized, culminating in its acquisition by Valeant Pharmaceuticals in 2013 for $8.7 billion; Lepu Medical Technology, a leading Chinese provider of cardiovascular devices, in which Warburg Pincus first invested in 2007, helped take public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange’s ChiNext Board in 2009 and ultimately exited in 2013 with the company’s market capitalization at $2.2 billion; and Kyphon, the pioneer of the first minimally invasive surgical procedure for repairing spine fractures, which grew from a start-up in 1996 to a global business that was acquired by Medtronic for $4.2 billion in 2007.
During her more than 25-year career in healthcare, Ms. Weatherman has served on the boards of 12 public companies, more than 25 private companies at every stage of development, and the National Venture Capital Association. She currently serves on the board of Tornier (NASDAQ: TRNX), a global orthopaedics company focused on shoulder implants which announced in October 2014 that it will merge with Wright Medical (NASDAQ: WMGI), and several private companies, including Outset Medical, a developer of a novel patient-centric kidney dialysis system, and Specialists On Call, a provider of on-demand specialist physician consultations to hospitals via video-conference.
Ms. Weatherman twice has been named to Forbes’ Midas List recognizing her as one of the 100 most highly-regarded dealmakers in the venture capital industry, and she was a recipient of the 2014 Women of Power and Influence Award from the National Organization of Women's New York City Chapter.
She received a BA in English, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Mount Holyoke College, and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she currently serves on the Dean's Advisory Council.
