WOMEN In America

Stories

The best way to learn about Women in America is to hear from some of the extraordinary women who participate in our organization.

”We are brought together because we are ambitious and we have that strong passion to make it.”

Being a part of this program has been really important for me. When I joined, I thought no one would understand my struggle unless they worked in Insurance and that was the furthest from the truth. Actually, everybody here understands.

We are brought together because we are ambitious and we have that strong passion to make it. Sometimes at work we are told to just be happy where we are, that we have gone far enough and we should continue to work and wait; that we will be fine. Mentors have reminded me not to sit and wait and to advocate for myself.

“I find I learn as much from younger women, who are the windows to the future, as I do from my peers who’ve built highly successful careers.”

As an investor, advisor, former managing director at General Atlantic and the author of Meet 100 People, I am so grateful to be a part of WIA, which is a wonderful community of women who want the best for one another. WIA offers educational opportunities as well as networking events to promote conversation and support. The educational presentations on career-related topics set the stage for more intimate small group discussions which serve as safe spaces to ask questions, share stories, and impart hard-earned wisdom.

I originally joined based on a recommendation from a person I knew. I discovered I had connections to a handful of other members. Along the way, I met many impressive people, both mentors and mentees. I find I learn as much from younger women, who are the windows to the future, as I do from my peers who’ve built highly successful careers. It is so gratifying to see the growth and development of mentees over time and so exciting to remain in touch with many WIA alumnae!

My advice for next generation leaders is to build your network: the people you know and the relationships you have are essential to career success and personal growth. Your value is greatly increased by who you know and how easily and quickly you can access resources. Proactive relationship building opens doors and opportunities throughout your life.

“The women at WIA put me on another level and the organization is a continued source of valued support thanks to the long-term relationships and trusted advice from mentors and peers.”

When I became a WIA mentee, I was trying to figure out what was next for me. The investment in this program helped me clarify my vision and gave me the tools to make an informed decision. Not only that but a mentor encouraged me to ask for a promotion to President of my company. With that support and encouragement, I took it up a notch and asked for and got the role of CEO.

Today, I am CEO of Oberon which is the first company in the world to commercialize renewable DME as a straightforward way to both slash the CO2 emissions of the huge propane industry, and transport renewable hydrogen more efficiently and cost effectively.

“I am continually surprised in the ways in which WIA has not only progressed my career, but truly enriched my life.”

I am continually surprised in the ways in which WIA has not only progressed my career, but truly enriched my life. My fellow “classmates” and I went through an intense learning agenda together over the first few years and are still close to this day. Growing up in a small town in Illinois, I did not have the same access to high caliber education as many of my peers. In many ways I felt this held me back and I was determined to move forward in my career.

I was at a crossroads over whether to pursue my MBA and was fortunate to be accepted into the Women in America program. I decided I was going to put my all into this group and leverage the information I could learn and the connections I would gain as my make-shift MBA network. Now, I not only have some amazing mentors but have built some great friendships as well. This is my graduate program for life.

“The women in WIA are genuine about trying to build relationships with one another.”

The women in WIA are genuine about trying to build relationships with one another. This is not unique to our events, it extends beyond to individual relationships and has been so meaningful to me. Thanks to those deep and trusted relationships, I have given myself permission to listen to my gut more. I was recently reminded by one of my mentors that I don’t need to try to fit into someone else’s mold and I can use my fire within to be the compass I use to make decisions. WIA came at a time when I needed it most, it felt like the organization wrapped a blanket around me and was my stability during a tough time.

“WIA has helped me to be brave and courageous.”

In my previous role, I was considered a high-performer and given a promotion with a lot more responsibility that came with a small cost-of-living pay bump. A mentor reminded me that it was not a promotion, it was more work for no more pay. She encouraged me to talk to my boss. I had never negotiated before and felt that as an Asian woman, I had been taught to just be grateful, be quiet, be humble and respect authority.

I finally summoned up the courage and scheduled the meeting. I was so nervous, but I went in there and told them I felt I was getting mixed signals about my value and should be compensated for this new role. I ended up getting the highest bonus in the practice. Thanks to the support from my WIA mentor, then and going forward, I had the confidence to ask for the package I wanted and deserved in my next role. WIA has helped me to be brave and courageous.

“It is my mission to pay it forward to bring up the next generation of leaders and WIA provides an environment for mentors and mentees to foster an authentic relationship that I find refreshing.”

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have good mentors and sponsors who are generous with their time to share valuable insight, guide me through key decision points, and encourage me to challenge myself to the next level. These great female role models inspire me to be my best self professionally.  As I progressed to leadership position, it is my mission to pay it forward to bring up the next generation of leaders and WIA provides an environment for mentors and mentees to foster an authentic relationship that I find refreshing. I learn from my fellow mentors as well as through interactions with mentees and alums.

My advice to the next generation is there is always a first time for everything. So, raise your hand for that stretch assignment and remember to give those who may not have all the right experiences a chance when you are in position to do so.

“At a retreat, one mentor said something that really stood out, ‘What if everything goes right?’ It was a huge a-ha moment for me.”

I feel so fortunate to be a part of this group and have the safe space to receive candid feedback. I have appreciated the trusted advice from so many mentors and peers. At a retreat, one mentor said something that really stood out “What if everything goes right?” It was a huge “a-ha” moment for me. It’s so easy as a woman in leadership to always be thinking about the things that could go wrong and since I work in Risk Management, I think about that a lot. But her statement was truly eye-opening for me. I have thought about it a number of times since then and it’s helped guide me in the right way.

“I hope to have the opportunity to continue to pay-it-forward to other WIA women embarking on big life transitions.”

In 2020, I joined WIA to become inspired and take my career to the next level while being more intentional with my personal goals. Thanks to the support of WIA, I embarked on what felt like a big risk. In 2021, I resigned from a 14-year career at Bloomberg in NYC and accepted an amazing opportunity at Bernstein Private Wealth. In addition to the uncertain and challenging times with covid, I sold my apartment, moved across the country, took licensing tests for my role as an advisor, and took care of a sick family member. It was hard. I am grateful to my WIA family, who encouraged me and helped me through this big change.

Since that time, I have built my practice in advising executives, entrepreneurs, and business owners with their personal and financial goals in NYC and FL. I hope to have the opportunity to continue to pay-it-forward to other WIA women embarking on big life transitions.
