In my previous role, I was considered a high-performer and given a promotion with a lot more responsibility that came with a small cost-of-living pay bump. A mentor reminded me that it was not a promotion, it was more work for no more pay. She encouraged me to talk to my boss. I had never negotiated before and felt that as an Asian woman, I had been taught to just be grateful, be quiet, be humble and respect authority.

I finally summoned up the courage and scheduled the meeting. I was so nervous, but I went in there and told them I felt I was getting mixed signals about my value and should be compensated for this new role. I ended up getting the highest bonus in the practice. Thanks to the support from my WIA mentor, then and going forward, I had the confidence to ask for the package I wanted and deserved in my next role. WIA has helped me to be brave and courageous.
